I. Greetings and Introductions
II. Old Business
A. 2008 NCSS Archives Committee Meeting Minutes (Houston, Texas)
B. Mike Lovorn & Mark Previte gave a status update for the on-going archives article project. The article is to outline and discuss the duties and purviews of the NCSS Archives Committee. Collaboration (Lovorn & Previte) will continue, and upon completion, will be submitted to Social Education for publication.
C. Mike Lovorn & Mark Previte gave an update on efforts to schedule NCSS Past President interviews.
III. New Business
A. Dr. Ronald Evans (San Diego State University) donated a collection of Harold Rugg tapes to the Archives collection. Dr. Evans used these tapes in the writing of his book on Rugg’s work in social studies. The 1950s-era tapes include Rugg’s retirement, several speaking engagements, Q&A on education, and orally-read letters. The tapes are currently in the possession of Brenda Gunn. She is the Associate Director of Research and Collections at the Dolph Briscoe Center (U.T. Austin).
B. Mike Lovorn & Mark Previte discussed the revised series of questions for NCSS Past Presidents, as well as upcoming interviews with Past Presidents Jean Craven (1984) and Michael Yell (2008).
C. We discussed the need to send someone (perhaps Dr. Brenda Parnes) to the Dolph Briscoe Center at U.T. Austin to determine the state of the NCSS Archives collection. It was suggested that this trip, as well as subsequent necessary cataloguing and archiving could be funded in various ways. The following suggestions were made to generate this funding:
1. We can e-mail Tim Daly about adding a $1 donation line for the Archives Committee to next year’s NCSS registration form.
2. We can speak to other NCSS officers, such as Susan Blanchette, about other possible fund-raising options for the committee.
3. We can also try to work with University of Texas Library Archivists to see if it is possible to have help from their graduate students.
D. Mark Previte introduced an Archives Committee project to commemorate NCSS’s 90th Anniversary (next year in Denver). Mark agreed to develop a basic design for banners (one for each decade) chronicling the history of NCSS. It was brought to our attention that Jean Cowan also has a video of NCSS Past Prersidents. It was agreed to try to feature this video.
E. Mark Previte & Mike Lovorn interviewed NCSS Past President Jean Craven. This interview was video-taped.
