Ken moved, Mohammad seconded, Minutes of November 2004 FASSE board meeting were approved.

Ken reported on McAuliffe? award recipient

Jeff Passe, NCSS President, stopped by and commended FASSE for its work. He is committed to seeking major corporate support for FASSE and interested in developing ?planned giving? program for FASSE.

Action Plan for 2005/06: Revision of the FASSE brochure: Walt and Phyllis will revise the brochure

Note
This needs to happen by June so that NCSS staff has adequate time to print the brochures and so brochures can be included in materials sent to each affiliated council for distribution at those council?s annual meetings.

Reviewers of McAuliffe? 2006 award: Sandy, (chair), Mohammad, Ken

Recognition of State Council contributions to FASSE: Gayle, Ken, and Terry will work with NCSS staff on this.

Discussion of DC Conference: Explore the possibility of adding a surcharge for Capitol Steps that would go to FASSE; hold a similar social event in San Diego; find a corporate sponsor for 2/3 or all of the event costs;

Discussion of DC Conference: Have a sponsored social event that is either free or mostly underwritten by the corporation with a set amount earmarked for FASSE. The major goal is publicity and visibility, rather than fundraising. Steven Seto will gather information about fun runs and send the information to Gayle to share with FASSE board for possible consideration at San Diego.

FASSE booth with banner, promotional brochures, and grant applications at DC and San Diego conference. This booth would need to be staffed Friday and Saturday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Each FASSE board member would need to take responsibility for covering two hours of the 20 hours. We suggested that the booth be set up at registration area and then moved closer to exhibits. We need to have a display that features previous winners (McAuliffe? and research grant). Ken & Sandy will work on this and will need to submit to Ella McDowell? by June 1).

We suggested that a celebrity (New Hampshire Congressman/Senator or NASA astronaut) award the McAuliffe? award at the NCSS Awards ceremony. Ken will work with Mark and Ana on this.

Bill reminded us that we need to rewrite the FASSE responsibility of local arrangements committee for annual conference. Gayle volunteered to work on this.

Phyllis suggested that the FASSE brochures be stuffed in the conference bag. We would need to work with Ella McDowell? by June 1.

Ana introduced Dr Rahima Wade who is the 2004 FASSE/CUFA Social Studies Inquiry Grant. She talked about the highlights of her grant. This funding was significant on several levels: She had done previous research on teaching for social justice by elementary teachers. This grant was an answer to her dream, allowing her to bring together 10 of 40 teachers for a focus group. Dr. Wade shared her research with CUFA, Has a contract with Teachers? College Press for a book on her research Elementary Social Studies for Social Justice. Dr. Wade shared a copy of her paper she is presenting at NCSS and she has submitted to a journal.

CUFA would like to co-sponsor a new research grant with FASSE. Marv moved, Sandy seconded, $5000 from FASSE with theme to be determined later. Mohammad and Gayle will work with CUFA on the new grant proposal

Moved by Sandy and seconded by Marvin to increase McAuliffe? award to $2500 for 2007 applicants with understanding that winner must present the project at NCSS conference the year following the award.

Ken discussed the point system for ranking McAuliffe? award winners . He will present a proposal to FASSE board for further discussion and refinement.

Adjourned at 3:20 p.m.

UPDATE TO MINUTES from Gayle Thieman April 23, 2006

FASSE BROCHURE: Gayle will send the current brochure in electronic format to Walt and Phyllis. When we originally created the brochure the subcommittee sent the proposed brochure to all members of FASSE for input and approval before sending it to NCSS staff.

2006 McAuliffe? Award At the April board meeting Ana Post (NCSS staff) reported that to date we have only received ONE award application. This is a serious issue. PLEASE ENCOURAGE TEACHERS IN YOUR STATE TO APPLY IMMEDIATELY.

Recognition of State Council Contributions to FASSE When state council contributions to FASSE are sent to the NCSS office, the treasurer notifies the Executive Director (Susan Griffin) who has a thank you letter written to the state. Staff is also creating a data base of state council contributions as it presently does with individual contributions. The spring TSSP included a list of all states that had contributed to FASSE in the past year.

At the February NCSS Board meeting, following discussion in the November HOD at NCSS, the board directed staff to develop a state council recognition system for FASSE contributions that would NOT prohibit a state council from earning Gold Star status. The NEW affiliation papers now include FASSE contribution as one way of meeting NCSS participation requirement for Gold/Silver Star. This is now included in the revised NCSS policy manual.

Conference Registration Income (in lieu of FASSE raffle) At the 2005 NCSS conference, $2.00 of the registration fee for members, non members, non member (who buys membership at conf), and local school group categories is designated for FASSE (divided 50-50 between FASSE Fund and McAuliffe?) in the conference budget. The total revenue from the conference registration this year was $5242 (twice the average FASSE raffle revenue). This procedure is now included in the revised NCSS policy manual.

At the April NCSS board meeting the NCSS finance director reported that the FASSE fund balance as of 3/31/06 is $99,421. We began the fiscal year with $89,724 in the FASSE fund. The fund earned $1050 in interest. The annual conference registration brought in $5242, and other contributions (including individuals and states) brought in $5905 for a total increase of $11,147 so far this year.
